Voici cet extrait : ---------- * Rivet & Smith (p. 326) : COUNUS (?) SOURCE - Ptolemy II, 3, 14 : Kwounnos nesos (= COUNNUS INSULA), vars. Kwounos (= COUNUS, preferred by Millier), Kwouennos (= COVENNUS), Koouenos (= COVENNUS), etc. It is unlikely that Cunis of Ravenna 10911 (= R&C 279) belongs here, even though it is listed among the islands; see CENIO DERIVATION. The correct form is very unsure. Jackson in JRS XXXVIII (1948), 56, discusses possibilities : an emendation to Koounos ( = *COUNUS) as is suggested by a variant could then represent Celtic *counos or better *caunos 'harbour', much the best semantically and supported by a number of Cauno- names and one Counos in Holder. If Koouinnos is read, British *couinnos 'chariot' might be intended, but this seems an unlikely name for an island. Holder's listing of the present name as Covenno-s seems merely to respond to his wish to identify it with modem 'Convey' island, presumably a misreading of Canvey in his notes. IDENTIFICATION. An island off the coast of south-eastern Britain (see p. 146).

| Hi.
I have wrote in my Etymologycal Dictionary, 'Consideracións Etimolóxicas acerca do Callaeco', 2009 (in press):
From de indo-european root *kew- 'strong' (IEW 592-94) we have the ampliation *kew-na-, celt. *kauna- 'cavity, cavern, protection': see in Britannia COVNVS (CVNIS en Rav. 109), CVNIA (Rav. 270).
In Hispania we see it in Lusitania: CAVNVS; Celtiberia:CAVNVS Mons, COVNEANCVS, COVNEIDOQ.
As nomeplace in Galicia: Couñago (< *kouniakos), Cuns (< *kounos), Cun (< *kounis).

In fact, there is no *kew- = strong cavus and related come from a *kew- = to dig see greek koîlos = hollow, armenian sor = hole hence, *kew-d h-/kew-g h- = to hide see britannic cuzaff, old english hûdan > hide, greek keút hô and various old indian forms However, there is a root *kuh 1- = to forge, latin cûdo, high old german houwan > hauen, old church slavonic kovonhence *kuh 1ús/kuh 1rós = strong : welsh cawr = champion, greek kûrios = master, old indian s'ûrah = strong

| Yes I know it, Alexandre, but the primitive PIE root *k'euh1- means 'swell, become rounded, grow’ (> ‘grow strong’ > ‘mighty’): see P. Schrijver, SBCP: 18 (skt. ´s´ávīra- 'strong, mighty'). Also, the same root means 'cover, protect' > 'protection; cave, cavern'.
On the other hand, celtic words with *kau-ro- and *kau-no- can indifferently mean 'cave'.
We have too from the same root *keuh1-aro- > celt. *kawaro-, and *keuh1-ko- > celt. *kau-ko-.
The etymology of the celtiberian forms is not sure, see B. Prósper kounesikum < *kom-ness-iko-, like oir. comnessach.
Only galician placename Couñago < *kauni-akos (from *keuh1-nyo-) is sure, because Cun could in fact be a local variant form of the galicien word con < celt. *akauno-.
In Hispania kauno- and kauro- make reference to montain names (see lus. CAVNVS, celtib. CAVNVS mons and call. CAVRIACA, gal.med. Caurel-today gal. Courel-, Cauria; lus. CAVRIA; celtib. CAVRIA)
(celtib.= celtiberian; lus. = lusitanien, call. = callaeco; gal.med. galego of the Middle Age, gal. = galego)
