| Un site non identifié d'Ecosse. * Rivet & Smith, p. 266 : SOURCE : Ravenna 10753 (= R&C 194) : BEGESSE DERIVATION. Williams identified this as derived from an Indo-European root *bheg- 'bend, curve' (as in English back), adding that here it could signify 'ridge'. Holder I. 138 relates to this the river Vegeria > Vègre (Seine-et-Oise, France), the personal names Vegeto(n), Vegiso(n) and Vegisonius (perhaps 'bent, hunch-backed' ?), and the place-names Begosum > Bégot (Hérault, France) and Begonium > Begon (Aveyron, France). Possibly related also is Bigeste of Ravenna 5530 and TP, in Dalmatia, modem Humac (Yugoslavia); cf. also Begensis in CIL vi. 37045. Possibly, then, having these analogues, the name seems less strange than it does at first glance, though its ending presents a problem (*-isso-, miscopied ?). There might be a relation to Ravenna's Ugueste 1089, which we examine further in that entry. IDENTIFICATION. Unknown, but evidently in Scotland. ----------- JCE _________________ "Ne te borne pas seulement à respirer avec l'air qui t'environne, mais à penser désormais avec l'intelligence qui environne tout.
