An inscription, RIB 1142 (Hexham Abbey, but thought to have been brought from Corbridge); an officer sets up an altar caesa Corionototarum manu 'after slaughtering a band of Corionototae'

DERIVATION. We follow the admirable analysis of this name by T. M. Charles-Edwards in 'Native Political Organisation in Roman Britain', Antiquitates Indogermanicae (Innsbruck, 1974), 35-45, at 38. The first element is British *corio- (see CORIA-1) with *-no- suffix (cognate with the suffix in Latin tribus-tribunus, domus-dominus), 'used to form words for leaders or representatives of a group'. The second element is British *tota, earlier *teuta, *touta 'people, state', represented by Welsh tud (Latin cognate totus < * toutos 'all, everybody'). Charles-Edwards continues : 

' In view of inscriptions to Mars Toutatis and the cult of the war-god Camulos, it is possible that *Korionos was a bye-name of the Celtic war-god, the god by whom this particular people swore, and after whom they called themselves. The whole name, Corionotatae, can be interpreted in two ways, either as the name for a group of *totas, or as the name for the inhabitants of a single *tota.. . . This second interpretation, which makes the Corionototae men belonging to a people or kingdom called *Korionotota, seems the more likely.'

IDENTIFICATION. An otherwise unknown people, presumably dwelling north of Hadrian's Wall and perhaps incorporated in one of the major tribes in this area.
